I've been talking to some people, and they've been telling me that tapers are fine to wear. They wear tapers until they hit their goal size, then they wear plugs. Apparently, they've not been having any problems, and they think I'm dumb when I say that's not a good idea, but then I realized I didn't know why. I've been searching the web, and I can't find why it's a bad idea. Can anyone help me talk some sense into my friend?

Re: Why are tapers bad to wear?
They get knocked around too easily, especially as they get bigger/longer. Sleeping on them can put them at weird angles which can put extra pressure on a new stretch, which can lead to a blowout. They also might just be too heavy which can also add pressure. Plus, they're usually made out of crappy materials like acrylic or low-quality steel that just aren't great to be wearing long-term.
Wearing tapers isn't the worst thing you can do and the risk of having problems with them goes down if you stretch slowly and properly, but it's better just to get some single-flare plugs.

I'm Lindsay.
I have 1/2" lobes and 11 piercings: left helix x2, both conches, both nostrils, septum, navel, and VCH.
My lobes are small but I know a lot about stretching and how to do it safely, so message me if you have any questions!

Tapers can cause more pressure then plugs and can result in a blowout.
I just don't like wearing them because they're uncomfortable especially when I'm sleeping.
They also make my ears sore from getting knocked around.

acrylic is perfectly fine to wear if your ears are truly healed when you stretch. the biggest problem with tapers is how heavy and bulky they are. as people have commented before, they get knocked around a lot which will slow healing.
