When I moved from 4g to 2g, I got a bad infection.
Most people will say to downsize and do a salt bath to avoid a blowout. I did that at the time, but when I moved up again, it got infected all over again. I always keep my piercings clean and stretch very slowly, but I took a chance and went ahead ...

Personally, I would do it.
There's a lot of people who will caution you not to change jewelry so soon, but if your ears are being irritated by the heavy jewelry, it will take exponentially longer to heal.
My vote is do it!
