It could be a reaction to the silicone. I suggest using glass or surgical implant grade steel or titanium jewellery.

Also if you're cleaning too much, or not enough, it could be causing irritation.

If the SSS dries your lobes out, try using less salt in them or doing them less frequently. If that doesn't help, just rub a little bit of fragrance free moisturiser on the outside of your lobe gently. I've heard that sleeping without your jewellery in, or even just going a few hours a day without jewellery in, is the best way to thicken your lobes.
