When I was switching from 2g to 0 I was using a moon shaped Gage and i swear I couldn't sleep the slightest touh would hurt an I thought it was normal but the next morning it hurt so bad I wantd to see how it looked, and to my suprise it looked infected and deformed so I switched to a regular gauge and it was WAY better, maybe you switch gauges.
I'm going to ignore all the incorrect terminology, but I agree, the curved shape of "claw" stretchers would seem less trustworthy than the straight and even plug/taper. On top of that, it depends on how healed and what condition your ears are in, along with pain tolerance.

Bottom line: You're doing it wrong if it hurts unbearably. Give yourself time between stretches.

For me, 3mm to 4mm is the worst. It swelled to my neck area. HAHA!

I think use PFTE tapes will be much more easier :D
I got from 4 to 6 in like two weeks by using that method without swelling or pain. But yea, not advisable :D

Ive used straight tapers for all of my stretches.
I tried taping, but the taped plug was really hard to get out of my ear, which i thought was really dodgy. I used ptfe tape btw.
Also, i found wrapping the tape round neatly without any bumps to be really frustrating.

I hate tape too...
I tapped one of my plugs (they were 20mm and I have 22mm), and 2 weeks later my left lobe was swollen. I think my ears hate the tape...

as much hate as it gets i highly recomend electrical tape. it takes away alot of frustration an u dont to wrap a billion times to move up. i used it an i moved from 9/16 to 3/4 in like a week an a half, no problems tears or swellin. the only thing is to make sure u clean em everyday cuz the tape will have residue. also lube them up a bit for comfort. :) ptfe in my experience sucks the big D, it always sticks to the fistula an is hard to apply to the plug.

The adhesive on electrical tape can cause bad reactions in some people... that's why it's not recommended. PTFE sticks to itself without glue or anything so that's why it's used.
I worried about it sticking to my lobes too, but if you oil it up enough every day it won't.

I have 1/2" lobes and 11 piercings: left helix x2, both conches, both nostrils, septum, navel, and VCH.
My lobes are small but I know a lot about stretching and how to do it safely, so message me if you have any questions!

Did you lube lots?
The tape has to go kind of translucent.

One of mine is still a little tight to start taping again.
So the tape all scrunches up. But in a week or so of gentle tugging it should be loose enough again.
Its just that first bit thats frustrating. Its sticks much better to itself than to jewellery.

But when applied some oil on the taped plug, like you said it turned translucent however when i push in the plug, the PFTE tape just crumbles. However i applied some vaseline on it and it's done :D ( I actually forgotten i got vaseline :o )
