What is it and is it a form of stretching that can be used?

Hey i remeber seeing a lot of pictures, cant find any right now to save my life, but some tribes putting a bunch of sticks or something in a tight formation into the ear, idk what this is or if it is a means of stretching or what... i can see how it could be used to stretch, slowly the lobe by putting in a new stick every once in a while im not sure if anyone has seen pictures like this or if im just confused but meh figured i'd ask!

Yeah you can stretch like that, but if I was you I won't do it, it doesnt make the hole look round.
