I was asked on another forum, for links to the hazards of an acrylic plug/ taper/ whatever getting stuck in the ear because the skin grows into the porous material.
The person asking, is I believe, a piercer and says that it is a myth, unless it is in combination with an infection causing the ear to swell around the plug, since the body will reject a material like acrylic, as it is not compatible with the body/skin.
I have heard it mentioned soooo often, the thing about the skin growing into the plug.... and now I am quite curious as to whether it is actually true?
So, if any of you have links to studies that prove/disprove, please post!

Skin growing into jewellery is more of a risk with silicone. But they're both unsuitable.
There might be something on the APP site. And I definately remember Elayne Angel writing something about it (not that I'd believe everything she said), though that might've been in a book.
Acrylic isn't autoclavable, and can be broken down over time by the body (some people argue it might release acid). Dental acrylic doesn't have that problem and can be cleaned, but you'll be lucky to find that. I've worn plugs that end up with a rough surface if I wore them too often. And it holds smells horribly, worse than metal, and ear cheese becomes a problem. Soooo much worse if it was in contact with a fresh stretch.
Looks pretty, but its icky.

and during the day just make sure to twist em and spin em regularly so u have fresh ears
acrylic is pourous so dont leave it in for long amounts of time

What is the difference between acrylic and the plastic jewelry? When my sister was little she was allergic to everything and she could only where the best surgical steel earrings or plastic. Now this was about 30 years ago so maybe different plastic, however if she could where only that or the best surgical steel then how bad can they be?
As far as them growing to flesh don’t you rotate jewelry on a daily basis?
