If the taper doesn't go in far enough to put an o-ring on, then you are not ready to stretch. You need to take the taper out and put in the size of jewelry you were wearing prior to the stretch attempt.

What he said. Don't ever wear a taper half way in. They're not meant to be worn as jewerly and can mess up your ears. You should wait at least a couple weeks-a couple months between sizes depending on how smart you've been stretching in the past, what size you're currently at, and your skin's elasticity. Also make sure you're doin vitamin E massages before doing your stretches because it helps make it a bit easier.
