In general it's safest to assume all stone is porous to some degree. Obsidian is supposed to be a "natural glass," though I would be nervous to tell someone that's fact. Hematite, on the other hand, I have heard little about regarding how porous it is. It's probably more porous than some stone and less so than others. The only crystal structure I would say is reasonably non-porous is glass.

As far as magnetism goes, any substance that is mildly magnetic and not toxic or radioactive is safe, unless you have a hearing aid or something else that the magnetism would interfere with.

According to Wikipedia, hematite is a weakly ferromagnetic substance. This means, it is slightly attracted to iron. There is iron in your blood, which could, actually, be good for your ears as it would encourage a little bit of extra flow through your lobes. I suspect, though, that this would be a negligible effect.

From another perspective, some holistic healers work with magnets because they believe magnets have healing powers. Do with that what you will. Good luck with your hematite jewelry. : )
