Bleeding the first time I stretched???

I just started stretching my ears, and since I don't know what my original piercing size was I started with a 14gauge. Everything went well when I put in my first tapers. There was a little pinch, but nothing too painful. I left them in for about 24 hours, and when took the left one out it started bleeding. As soon as I wiped away the blood away, it stopped bleeding. Should I buy a smaller gauge, or let these ones heal?
