Studio or DIY piercing procedure?

I currently don't have pierced ears and i'm not sure about which method for piercing them would be best. My earlobes are decently big, not huge but a fair amount of skin to work with. I saw one guy who was starting his ear stretching journey by punching a 1mm hole in his ear instead of a standard size piercing needle. Does it make the ears look better when you do that? Anyone recommend? If a regular needle works just as good then i'd do it DIY instead of getting my ears punched at a studio.
