Is it alright to leave a taper in for a day?? I can get it in, but dont feel comfortable pushing it straight through, would it be okay to push it in a little further ever hour or so?? or is it better to just push it straight through?

Thats what i have always done, and never had a problem.
the one time i tried putting a plug in right after i stretched the little groove on the back of it sliced my ear.
do whatever you find works!

I push mine straight through in one go, but only if it's not painful and doesn't need forcing. To be honest, I would have thought that if you were doing it a little at a time then it could get a little swollen and be difficult to get through.
If it's a little reluctant I personally would take it out, stay at your current size for a couple of weeks and then try again.
If you just left it in for a day it probably wouldn't be too bad, but a taper is a tool, not jewellery, and it can damage your ear fairly easily if you catch it or sleep funny on it, ect.

I've always did that. I used tapers until I reached 20 mm (3/4 of an inch), and when I had difficulties to get it through, I leave it in and push it later in the day. It worked very well.

I would be careful doing this for more than a day though, I've heard that it can cause uneven stretching. I know magalo's ears are very healthy and she has quite a bit of experience, but remember everyone's ears are different.

One problem I see with this is that the back of the taper is so much smaller than the front, so the back of the hole may shrink around the smaller part of the taper and when you pushed it through the rest of the way it'd be stretched too much. I would definitely recommend just stopping and waiting a few more weeks... are you using any type of oil/lube and are you stretching after a hot shower? If not, you should try it. Or you can try taping since it's more gradual. Also, keep in mind that tapers are meant to be stretching tools, not worn long-term.

You're fine man. Just avoid using tapers or pinchers above half inch.
Cheers!
